When I was a boy

Four houses down from me
Was a family with an only child
She was the only girl
In this whole world that could make me smile

Down the road
I made up reasons to go
Down the road

Somewhere inside of me
There was something she took a liking to
And I asked her to marry me
She said she really wanted to

Down the road
To see what life’s gonna hold
Down the road

Her momma wants to know
If I washed in the blood or just in the water
Her daddy wants to know
If I make enough to take his daughter

Down the road
Before he can let her go
Down the road

Now down the street from here
There’s an engineer with an only son
And our baby girl says
She believes that he is the only one

Down the road

Mamma wants to know
Is he washed in the blood or just in the water
And I wanna know if makes enough
To take my daughter

Down the road
When it comes time to go
Down the road

Down the road
You know I’m gonna help her go
Down the road

Down the road

It would figure that Nashville disregards a great group like Restless Heart and their reunion only to give one of their great songs to another artist to make into a hit.

Kenny Chesney does a great job on this song but it is disgusting to me that Restless Hearts reunion was treated with total disregard by Nashville.

Now we have Nashville selling out to the kids and allowing songs like Gloriana’s Wild At Heart to get air play. Taylor Swift is also one who’s music is pop fluff. Though both put out good music it is not music that would have made the country charts fifteen to twenty years ago.

Yes, it is okay for artist to have cross over hits. Those cross over songs should only be on radio stations playing the particular genre of music those cross over hits are intended for. Taking an obvious pop song by an artist like Leann Rimes, Shania Twain or Taylor swift and changing a few instrument chords to be played on Contemporary top 40 radio is a joke. You can’t take a pop song and make it MORE of a pop song.

Restless Heart had great cross over appeal and when country played their cross over songs it was wrong. Exile also had a big cross over hit that should not have been played on country radio.

The problem with some of the music and artist of the past 12 or so years is that they forgot to realize they were supposed to be country artist. This is due in large part to the fact that country allowed them to get away with so many cross over songs on country radio. That and the fans being more than accepting of the change.

When country realizes that it is a genre unto itself groups/performers who are predominantly country will get respect from Nashville.

It seems artist who a few years ago were quite successful are being pushed out by the Gloriana’s and Taylor Swifts of “Country Music!!”

If it was not for “I’ll Still Be Loving You” and it’s cross over to the “pop” stations I would not have found Restless Heart! Though I agree with most of what you have to say..I think their music is playable on both Pop and Country.
And as for “Down The Road”, it was written by Mac McAnally and he produced “Still Restless”- I would say it was the now defunct record labels fault that RH did not release the song.
Nashville did totally disregard their reunion which is sad…it is sad that a lot of people are just now finding out they are reunited when they have been back and on the road together again for several years!!

That’s my point. The song you mentioned was not really pop and had no business on pop radio. However songs like Tell me what you dream and When she cries should never have been played on country radio. If artist want to do cross over stuff that is fine but to have those songs played on country radio is wrong.

I am glad you discovered Restless Heart and I’ll Still Be Loving You but the reality is the aforementioned song is not really all that pop or contemporary top 40!! It should not have been played on those stations.

Music has genres for a reason. Otherwise we can forget differences in music and play all music in one format. I for one am not into that.

Taylor Swift is the best country-pop singer today. I love all her songs and i love the she dress. She is pretty too. ‘

  5. Gary Linger says:

Holly, I am not so much putting down Taylor as I am stating that much of what she sings is more pop than country.

Taylor came out to be a country artist but so many in your/her age group really don’t know or appreciate a more traditional country sound.

That is fine with me but I don’t want country to become so pop that country is no longer a genre.

Restless Heart had a few cross over hits. However most of their music had a country sound. Evolved maybe but still country.

If artist want to cross over that is fine but let those cross over songs play on the contemporary pop 40 stations and not country radio.

I am grateful that Taylor Swift can be the Role Model you younger folks need. She is so much better than Brittney Spears and the other young ladies being manipulated and used to sell cd’s. Taylor showed class can sell cd’s and for that I applaud her and her handlers.

    Shania Twain for me is the best country music singer of all times, I also like Taylor Swift but nothing will beat Shania Twain ;”;
